Pisa – Places to Visit

Pisa in Italy is a great destination for a weekend break. Pisa Airport is served by Ryanair, so affordable travel to Pisa is now a possibility. Obviously the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the number 1 tourist attraction in the area, but there are plenty of other things to see besides this ancient monument.
You will probably need a rental car to see all the sites, and there are lots of companies offering low cost car hire comparisons at Pisa Airport .
The Cathedral of our Lady of Assumption
The construction of The Cathedral of our Lady of Assumption began in 1604, on exactly the same day as work was started on Venice’s Basilica San Marco. Some of the original statues have now been replaced by copies in order to preserve them and the originals can be viewed at Opera del Duomo museum
Pisa Baptistery
The construction on the baptistery began in 1153, and unlike the tower, and was the work of Diotisalvi. While Diotisalvi was the architect, many of the facades sculptures were father and son Nicola and Giovanni Pisano.
The Museum of Ancient Boats
This museum is one that was discovered by accident when, in 1998, work was going on to create a new railway and several boats and also parts of a city harbour were found, all perfectly preserved. The absence of Oxygen and water bearing stratum allowed the perfect preservation, and these priceless artefacts are now on display at the unique open air museum, which is very much work in progress and there are still active digs hoping to unearth more treasures. They have limited opening hours on Friday and Saturdays only and by reservation only.
More Pisa Attractions
Other attractions worth visiting include The Arno Promenade with its Middle Age buildings and The Monumental cemetery or Camposanto, where the most important citizens of Pisa were buried for centuries.
